Banded Iron Course

Banded Iron Course
from 4 to 360h flexible workload
certificate valid in your country

What will I learn?

This course offers a targeted, hands-on approach to mastering Precambrian Banded Iron Formations (BIFs), covering field and core identification through to sophisticated laboratory methods. Participants will learn to plan practical projects, log and sample with assurance, handle data effectively, and combine petrography, geochemistry, isotopes, and structural data to form robust interpretations of ancient settings and compile reports ready for publication.

Elevify advantages

Develop skills

  • Design BIF studies: establish clear objectives, sampling strategies, and quality control processes.
  • Log BIFs in field and core: identify banding, structures, and deformation effects.
  • Integrate petrography and geochemistry: correlate textures, REE patterns, and iron isotopes.
  • Apply laboratory techniques efficiently: XRF, ICP-MS, XRD, stable and Fe isotopes for BIF analysis.
  • Interpret BIFs within Precambrian settings: connect to redox conditions, ocean chemistry, and Great Oxidation Event.
