Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Language Course
Build the anatomical and physiological foundation every speech-language therapy student needs to succeed. This course takes you from cellular tissue basics through cortical language networks, covering respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and swallowing in precise clinical detail. By the end, you will confidently connect structural anatomy to real communication disorders.

What will I learn?
You will master the anatomy and physiology of every system involved in human speech and language, from the respiratory mechanics that power voice to the neural circuits that process language. You will study laryngeal structure and vocal fold vibration, the articulators that shape consonants and vowels, and the velopharyngeal mechanism that controls resonance. The course covers cranial nerve pathways, cortical language areas, and motor tracts relevant to dysarthria and aphasia. You will also examine swallowing anatomy and its overlap with speech structures. Clinical chapters connect each anatomical system directly to voice disorders, resonance disorders, dysphagia, and neurogenic communication disorders.
Elevify advantages
Develop skills
- Respiratory Anatomy for Speech: Identify thoracic structures and explain breath support for spoken communication.
- Laryngeal Physiology: Analyse vocal fold mechanics and neural pathways controlling voice production.
- Neuroanatomical Mapping: Connect cortical language areas and motor pathways to specific communication disorders.
- Clinical Disorder Reasoning: Apply structure-function relationships to assess voice, fluency, and swallowing conditions.
