Banded Iron Course
4 to 360 hours flexible workload
valid certificate in your country

What will I learn?

This course provides a targeted, hands-on approach to mastering Precambrian banded iron formations (BIFs), covering field and core identification through to sophisticated laboratory methods. Participants will learn to plan practical projects, log and sample with confidence, handle data effectively, and combine petrography, geochemistry, isotopes, and structural data to develop robust interpretations of ancient settings and create reports ready for publication.

Elevify advantages

Develop skills

  • Design BIF research projects with clear goals, sampling strategies, and quality control processes.
  • Log BIF features in the field and from core samples, noting banding, structures, and later modifications.
  • Combine petrographic and geochemical data, relating textures, rare earth elements, and iron isotopes.
  • Efficiently use key lab techniques like XRF, ICP-MS, XRD, and isotope analysis tailored to BIFs.
  • Interpret BIFs within Precambrian settings, connecting to redox conditions, ocean chemistry, and the Great Oxidation Event.
