What will I learn?

The Specimen Collection Course provides straightforward, hands-on training to assist you in gathering blood, urine, and swab samples correctly and without risk. You will learn venipuncture methods, selecting the right tubes, the sequence for drawing blood, procedures for blood cultures and coagulation, identifying patients and obtaining consent, guidelines for fasting and preparation, ways to avoid hemolysis, criteria for rejecting samples, and appropriate storage and transport to ensure reliable results and minimise mistakes.

  • Master venipuncture by selecting tubes, following the order of draw, and avoiding pre-analytic errors.
  • Collect blood cultures and coagulation samples in an aseptic manner using the correct sequence.

  • Recognise and handle hemolysed, mislabelled, or rejected specimens according to laboratory standards.
