What will I learn?

In this course, you will examine the political systems, economic forces, and cultural movements that defined Europe between 1871 and 1914. You will study Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and early cinema alongside labour politics, colonial empires, and nationalist conflicts. You will analyse how urbanisation transformed class structures, gender roles, and daily life in major European cities. You will also investigate the intellectual currents of the period, from Nietzsche and Freud to Naturalist literature and cabaret culture. By the end, you will understand how the tensions of this prosperous age accumulated into the catastrophic outbreak of World War I.
