What will I learn?
This focused course builds practical skills in differential equations for modelling pollutant transport and decay in rivers. You will derive ODE and PDE models from mass balance, solve advection–decay equations, analyze steady states, and compare compartment and distributed approaches. Learn to handle units, estimate parameters, assess limitations, and clearly communicate risk and results to non-technical decision makers.
Elevify advantages
Develop skills
- Build mass-balance ODE models: turn inflow, outflow, and decay into dC/dt forms.
- Solve advection–decay PDEs: apply method of characteristics for fast river modelling.
- Compare ODE vs PDE transport: judge mixing assumptions and pick the right model.
- Estimate and scale key parameters: u, A, k, Q, residence times, and safety limits.
- Communicate risk clearly: convert concentration outputs into concise public guidance.
