Trace the ideas that built the modern world — from Descartes and Voltaire to the American and French Revolutions. If you want to think more clearly about reason, rights, and democracy, this is where you start.

What will I learn?
You will study the historical origins of the Enlightenment and the philosophical foundations that defined it, including empiricism, natural law, and the concept of progress. You will engage directly with major thinkers such as Locke, Rousseau, Voltaire, and Kant, reading and analysing their most important texts. You will examine how Enlightenment ideas shaped political revolutions, legal systems, and modern democracy. You will also confront the movement's contradictions — its exclusions of women and enslaved peoples, and its entanglement with colonialism. Finally, you will assess critiques from Romanticism, Marxism, and postcolonial theory to form your own evidence-based judgment of the Enlightenment's lasting relevance.
