Step onto the mat and build real judo skills from the ground up. This beginner course takes you from your first bow to your first competition, covering throws, groundwork, and the principles that make judo work. You will train with purpose, fall safely, and develop the confidence to hold your own in live practice.

What you will learn:

You will start with judo's history, dojo etiquette, and the belt system so you understand exactly where you are headed. From there, you will master breakfalls in every direction before learning to throw with hip, hand, and foot techniques. You will develop proper stance, grip fighting, and balance-breaking skills that set up every technique you attempt. Groundwork fundamentals including pins, chokes, and armlocks give you a complete game on the mat. Randori sessions put everything into live practice against real partners. By the end, you will understand competition rules, combination attacks, and how to keep improving on your own.

Falling Safely: Ukemi Techniques

  • Lesson 1 • Back Breakfall (Ushiro Ukemi)

Teaches the backward breakfall from seated, crouching, and standing positions. This is the most frequently needed fall in judo and the foundation for all others.

  • Lesson 2 • Applying Ukemi Under Pressure

Integrates all breakfall types into dynamic partner drills. Learners develop the reflex to select and execute the correct fall automatically.

  • Lesson 3 • Principles of Safe Falling

Explains the biomechanics of impact absorption and why ukemi is the first skill taught. Builds the mental framework for relaxed, controlled falling.

  • Lesson 4 • Forward Rolling Breakfall (Mae Ukemi)

Introduces the forward roll breakfall for front-direction throws. Mastery allows learners to receive hip and shoulder throws without injury.

  • Lesson 5 • Side Breakfall (Yoko Ukemi)

Develops the lateral breakfall used when thrown to either side. Connects directly to the most common throw directions learners will encounter.

Posture, Gripping, and Movement

  • Lesson 1 • Kuzushi: Breaking Opponent's Balance

Explains the eight directions of kuzushi and how to apply them through grip and movement. Kuzushi is the prerequisite for every successful throw.

  • Lesson 2 • Combining Posture, Grip, and Movement

Integrates stance, grip, and footwork into continuous partner movement exercises. Learners develop the coordination needed to set up throws effectively.

  • Lesson 3 • Natural and Defensive Postures

Covers shizen-tai and jigo-tai stances and when each is appropriate. Correct posture is the prerequisite for effective attack and defence.

  • Lesson 4 • Footwork and Movement Patterns

Introduces tsugi-ashi and ayumi-ashi stepping methods for mat movement. Efficient footwork enables entry into throws without telegraphing intent.

  • Lesson 5 • Gripping Fundamentals (Kumi-kata)

Teaches standard sleeve and lapel grips and the mechanics of grip strength. Grip control determines who initiates and controls the throw.

Chapter 4See details

Core Throwing Techniques: Nage-waza

  • Lesson 1 • Hand Throws: Seoi-nage

Covers the one-arm and two-arm shoulder throw variations, among the most versatile techniques in judo. Seoi-nage develops deep entry and lifting mechanics.

  • Lesson 2 • Foot and Leg Throws: De-ashi-barai and O-soto-gari

Introduces foot sweep and major outer reap throws that exploit timing and momentum. These techniques teach learners to use the opponent's movement against them.

  • Lesson 3 • Structure of a Throw: Kuzushi, Tsukuri, Kake

Breaks down every throw into its three phases: unbalancing, entry, and execution. Understanding this framework accelerates learning of all subsequent techniques.

  • Lesson 4 • Throw Drilling and Uchi-komi Practice

Uses repetitive entry drilling (uchi-komi) to build muscle memory for all learned throws. Consistent uchi-komi is the primary method for ingraining technique.

  • Lesson 5 • Hip Throws: O-goshi and Harai-goshi

Teaches the major hip throw and sweeping hip throw, two foundational techniques. Hip throws develop core rotation and entry mechanics used across many techniques.

Chapter 5See details

Ground Techniques: Ne-waza Fundamentals

  • Lesson 1 • Basic Chokes: Shime-waza Introduction

Introduces the naked choke and cross-collar choke as fundamental submission tools. Learners learn safe application and the importance of immediate tapping.

  • Lesson 2 • Basic Armlocks: Juji-gatame

Teaches the cross armlock as the foundational joint lock in judo. Correct mechanics and tap-out awareness are emphasised to prevent injury.

  • Lesson 3 • Pinning Techniques: Osaekomi-waza

Covers kesa-gatame, yoko-shiho-gatame, and tate-shiho-gatame hold-downs. Effective pins score ippon and are the primary goal of ne-waza.

  • Lesson 4 • Escaping and Reversing Pins

Teaches systematic escape routes from each major pin position. Escape skills are as important as pinning and build confidence in groundwork.

  • Lesson 5 • Transitioning from Standing to Ground

Teaches how to follow a throw to the ground and establish position. Seamless transition prevents opponents from recovering and is critical in competition.

Randori: Supervised Free Practice

  • Lesson 1 • Applying Throws in Live Practice

Focuses on attempting learned throws against a moving, resisting partner. Learners discover timing, distance, and kuzushi in a realistic context.

  • Lesson 2 • Full Randori Integration

Combines standing and groundwork into complete randori sessions. Learners practise the full judo sequence from grip to throw to ground control.

  • Lesson 3 • Ne-waza Randori

Conducts groundwork-only free practice to develop pinning and submission skills. Isolated ne-waza randori builds confidence before full randori integration.

  • Lesson 4 • Rules and Objectives of Randori

Defines randori's purpose as cooperative learning rather than competition. Clear rules prevent injury and ensure both partners develop simultaneously.

  • Lesson 5 • Randori Reflection and Goal Setting

Uses structured reflection after each session to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Goal setting accelerates technical development between classes.

Chapter 7See details

Combination and Counter Techniques

  • Lesson 1 • Basic Counter-Throws (Kaeshi-waza)

Introduces countering an opponent's throw attempt with a throw of your own. Counters require reading opponent commitment and redirecting their momentum.

  • Lesson 2 • Principles of Combination Attacks

Explains how a failed first attack creates openings for a second technique. Understanding this principle transforms single-throw thinking into strategic sequences.

  • Lesson 3 • Throw-to-Ground Combinations

Links throwing attempts directly into ne-waza entries when the throw is partially successful. This skill is essential for scoring in competition.

  • Lesson 4 • Applying Combinations Under Pressure

Tests combination and counter skills in live randori with increased resistance. Learners consolidate strategic thinking developed throughout the chapter.

  • Lesson 5 • Standing Throw Combinations

Teaches specific two-throw sequences such as o-soto-gari into seoi-nage. Practised combinations become automatic responses in randori.

Chapter 8See details

Competition Rules and Beginner Shiai

  • Lesson 1 • Prohibited Techniques in Competition

Identifies techniques banned in beginner and standard competition for safety. Awareness of prohibited actions prevents disqualification and injury.

  • Lesson 2 • Beginner Shiai and Post-Match Review

Conducts an in-class tournament with full referee protocols and scoring. Post-match review identifies technical and tactical lessons from each match.

  • Lesson 3 • Scoring System and Referee Signals

Explains ippon, waza-ari, and penalty scoring along with standard referee gestures. Knowing the scoring system allows learners to compete with clear objectives.

  • Lesson 4 • Pre-Competition Mental Preparation

Teaches warm-up routines, focus strategies, and managing pre-match nerves. Mental readiness is as important as physical preparation for beginner competitors.

  • Lesson 5 • Competition Area and Time Rules

Covers contest area boundaries, match duration, and out-of-bounds rules. Spatial and time awareness directly affects tactical decision-making during a match.
